| The most ancient Nays were made of animal bones with two or three holes and they were used as a handle of a whip and an instrument by Turk and Hun shepherds.Later they were made of reeds.Now they are made of bamboo and metal.Their length differs from one another.The ones made of bones are twenty centimetrers long. Nay is played by putting air into it and there are many sound holes on it.When they are played, the sound holes are covered with fingers fully and half to make different sound. Nay makes loud sound and reach far away. Their sound is melodic and played by one person.They play important part in orchestras to make fast and lively music.The commonly used Nay has eight holes. Their sound range is from d1 to d3. They have thick sound between d1 and b1, loud sound betweent c2 and g2 and clear and high between b2 and d3. In Xinjiang Museum,there is a Nay of South and North Dynasty (from 420 to 581 A.D.). It was made of bones with three holes. It was unearthed in Tokuz Saray of Maralbishi county and it was the instrument of ancient tribes. |
